: Original deep maroon cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Binding is almost entirely separated from pages: evidence of past repairs on endpapers, gluing and mesh separated from spine. Evidence of pest damage on pages and endpapers, and slightly on boards. Spine is torn, and also heavily faded. Boards are scuffed, corners lightly frayed. Text block is split completely at the center. Interior pages are tanned but mostly in good work was designed for students who had studied, or were studying Persian in India. The book highlights the differences between the Persian of Afghanistan and Iranian Persian in pronunciation, diction, and construction. It also includes notes on composition and rhetoric. The book contains selections from works in Persian, Urdu, and Arabic to demonstrate grammatical differences. Douglas Craven Phillott (1860-1930) was a British army officer, serving in India and later as consul in Persia. He was a scholar of Urdu, Persian, and Hindustani, and also wrote a treatise on falconry in Persian. Hardcover, acceptable condition. 937 pages, octavo.
