Description
In 1968, Lynnie, a young white woman with a developmental disability, and Homan, a deaf African American man, are confined to the School for the Incurable and Feebleminded, where they are neglected and forgotten. Despite their circumstances, they share a deep love for each other and manage to escape, seeking refuge in the farmhouse of Martha, a retired schoolteacher and widow. However, their escape is complicated by the fact that Lynnie has recently given birth to a baby girl.
That same night, the authorities track them down. As they close in, Homan flees into the night, while Lynnie is captured. Before being returned to the institution, she whispers two words to Martha: “Hide her.” This marks the beginning of a 40-year journey for Lynnie, Homan, Martha, and baby Julia—lives shaped by seemingly insurmountable challenges, but held together by a powerful secret and enduring love.
